SHINGLE / MANUFACTURER EXAMPLE

Architectural shingles.

15-year wind warrantyGAF WindProven · qualifying systems

GAF offers wind coverage without a maximum wind-speed limit on qualifying LayerLock shingles installed with the required four GAF accessory categories. The written warranty sets the coverage and restrictions; it is not a promise of unlimited physical storm resistance.

For durability, we review ventilation, shingle sealing, nailing, flashing and exposure. A warranty term is different from a roof’s service life.

METAL / LONGEVITY REFERENCE

Standing seam & metal.

50+ years possibleMcElroy Metal’s published lifespan guidance

Longevity depends on the metal, coating, environment and maintenance. Coastal exposure, fasteners, penetrations and finish condition deserve particular attention.

Wind-uplift resistance is specific to the panel profile, gauge, clips or screws, spacing and deck. The approved assembly’s pressure limits must meet the design loads for each roof zone.

TILE / LONGEVITY REFERENCE

Concrete & clay tile.

Up to 75 yearsEagle’s guidance for maintained concrete tile

This is a concrete-tile lifespan reference, not a guarantee for every tile roof. Clay tile has its own product specification. Underlayment, flashings and other components can need repair or replacement sooner than the tiles.

Weight alone does not establish wind resistance. The selected tile, attachment method, roof slope and edge details must form an approved system.

FLAT / LOW-SLOPE TPO

A continuous membrane.

Up to 25-year guaranteeGAF EverGuard · eligible systems and contractors

GAF publishes guarantees up to 25 years for eligible EverGuard TPO systems, depending on contractor certification and system requirements. Final coverage is confirmed in writing; the term is not a service-life prediction.

Heat-welded seams, membrane attachment, perimeter edges and drainage are critical. Wind pressure must be checked for the full approved roof assembly, not the membrane alone.

How much hurricane wind pressure can a roof handle?

There is no single pressure rating for “shingle,” “metal,” “tile” or “TPO.” Wind loads are calculated for the property. Corners and edges can require stronger attachment than the roof’s center.

psfPressure on the roof systemmphWind speed used in designUpliftWind trying to lift the roof

A roof assembly’s allowable pressure must meet the calculated load. A test classification such as UL Class 90 is not a 90 mph hurricane rating. We confirm the approved assembly, fastening pattern and pressure requirements before installation.

What do ring-shank nails contribute?

The rings help resist a nail pulling out of the wood. Roof-deck fasteners attach sheathing to the framing; shingle nails serve a different purpose.

IBHS reports that 8d ring-shank nails with closer spacing can double roof-deck uplift resistance compared with the common smooth-nail attachment it tested. This result depends on the complete attachment pattern, not simply the nail’s name.

Does a wind rating mean a roof is hurricane-proof?

No roof can be assigned a universal number of hours of hurricane protection. Debris impact, sustained rain, pressure changes and the condition of the whole building affect the result.

Deck attachment, sealed roof deck or approved underlayment, flashing, roof-to-wall connections and the covering work together. A wind warranty has its own coverage and exclusions.

What helps the roof last longer?

Keep drainage clear, address small leaks promptly and arrange professional inspections, especially after severe weather. Check loose fasteners, damaged shingles or tiles, flashing and TPO seams. Never assume an intact-looking surface means every layer beneath it is sound.

Your proposal identifies the roof covering, deck repair scope, attachment, water barrier, ventilation and applicable manufacturer warranty.
